VOICE FOR WORKERS

GENEVA: Crown Prince and Economic Development Board Chairman Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa announced yesterday that the first regional dialogue on workers' issues would be held in Bahrain. "This will offer countries that recruit manpower and those that provide it an opportunity to engage in an open and honest discussion on the impact of globalisation." Shaikh Salman called on the parties concerned to take part in the dialogue, to be held between Asian workers, employers and governments.

Speaking at the 96th International Labour Organisation (ILO) Assembly at the European headquarters of the UN in Geneva, Switzerland, Shaikh Salman said Bahrain welcomed all foreign manpower and was committed to protecting their rights in accordance with human principles and international legislation.

He noted, however, that the disorderly flow of foreign workers created a state of anarchy in the labour market and was not in the interests of citizens and their future.

The more young people join the labour market the stronger the need to provide them with a favourable working environment that stimulates them to realise their ambitions, Shaikh Salman said.
