A BAHRAIN resident found dead in India just three weeks after his wedding will be buried today. Basil Mammen, 26, was found collapsed in his car on the day he was due to fly back to Bahrain.
It was earlier reported that the Standard Chartered Bank employee had been killed in a road accident.
But sources revealed yesterday that he was found unconscious in a car following a farewell gathering at a friend's home in Mumbai.
Friends found him when they emerged in the morning and took him to a private hospital in New Mumbai, where he was declared dead.
The cause of death was not known last night.
His mother Molly Mammen, head teacher at the Asian School, left for Mumbai on Monday night, accompanied by the school's administrative co-ordinator Gigi Sebastian.
His father Mammen Mathew, an employee of Ahmed Mansoor Al A'ali, was already in India.
Asian School principal and director Joseph Thomas said the entire school community was in deep shock.
The school will be closed today, as a tribute to Basil.
However, teachers will meet today to offer condolences and to hold a prayer meeting at the school.
"It is sad that Basil met with the tragedy just three weeks after his marriage," said Mr Joseph.
"He was a very friendly boy who was loved by many."
Basil married Tina Cherian, 25, a Gulf Air air hostess, in Kerala on August 18. "We attended the wedding," said Mr Joseph.
Basil also studied in the Indian School and the Global Institute. His mother has been at the Asian School for 16 years.
His sister Olga is also a former student of the Indian School and she lives in Mumbai, after her marriage in January this year.
Tina flew from Kerala to Mumbai yesterday.
The funeral will be held at the Khoper Khairne Catholic Cemetery in New Mumbai at 4pm today.
Mr Joseph and vice-principal Elizabeth Joseph left for Mumbai last night to attend the funeral.
A memorial mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Church at 5pm tomorrow.
