Key issues on agenda for Doha GCC summit

A LOT of hopes are being pinned on the upcoming Doha summit including the creation of a GCC common market, Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said.

GCC nationalisation on work, commerce and other issues would be discussed at the summit. The current political crisis, military co-operation and boosting the peninsula shield by adding a central command will also be on the agenda, he told Qatari daily Al Sharq in an interview yesterday.

Shaikh Khalid said there were mechanisms to carry out GCC resolutions without the need for a unanimous vote, stressing that these could hinder the resolutions directly or indirectly.

He said the best way was for the countries which were ready to implement a resolution and leave others to implement it once they were ready.

Regarding a unified GCC currency, he said Oman had the right not to join the plan but there were other countries willing to go ahead and that there was nothing wrong in implementing the project while Oman could join later.

Shaikh Khalid said this was also represented in the proposal by the Kuwaiti Amir, who had stated that any country ready to implement any resolution such as a unified currency had the right to go ahead without waiting for other GCC states.
