MANAMA: His Majesty King Hamad last night praised the crucial role of the media in the country's development.

He hailed its contribution in promoting national reforms and strengthening democracy.

The freedom journalists enjoy is a testimony to Bahrain's commitment to this essential pillar of dialogue, growth and development, the King said in a speech marking World Press Freedom Day.

Freedom of Press is consolidated by the country's reforms project, particularly the freedom of opinion and expression, which are guaranteed by the law, he said. Bahrain is moving fast towards a democracy that would cherish achievements, incarnate the reforms' radiant values that both the leadership and the people have pledged to consolidate, through a common vision based on the National Action Charter and the constitution, His Majesty said.

Bahrain's celebration of the day coincides with efforts by legislative and executive powers to achieve maximum security, protection and freedom for the Press, he said.
