 Lighten up!

I write with reference to Tim Storey's letter 'A Pagan Feast' decrying Halloween as something 'foreign to Christian tradition and having become a superstitious and empty way of imposing mindless triviality, and an ignorant celebration of death, the devil, and hell.' (GDN, November 1).

What I witnessed on Saturday night as children and their parents engaged in trick or treating was something actually quite different ... a multicultural, multifaith, and multinational celebration enjoyed immensely by both children and their parents.

A shared tradition perhaps to be passed from generation to generation, something all the wonderfully costumed kids and their parents will hopefully remember for many years to come.

It was an evening of suspense and excitement, good conversation, a sense of community and good, clean fun.

And I saw nothing in last night's festivities that would prevent those same families from celebrating All Saints Day and remembering lost, yet eternally loved ones. A suggestion Tim ... give some thought to lightening up a little, and in the process, maybe get a life! Conrad Eilts
