ANKARA: The Islamic world can overcome the current global financial crisis by boosting co-operation among member countries, provided they have the political willingness to back the drive for stronger economic and commercial ties and explore new markets and opportunities, a group of Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) leaders heard yesterday.
Addressing the first conference of the permanent economic and commercial co-operation committee of the OIC, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Economic Development Board Chairman, highlighted the various challenges in the regional and international arena, especially the modernisation of Islamic economies and boosting productivity and innovation.
HRH the Crown Prince has been deputised by His Majesty King Hamad to attend the forum that began in Ankara yesterday under the chairmanship of Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
He stressed the crucial importance of collective support to the OIC to cope with scientific and technological development, so that it becomes an instrument for economic progress, peace and stability in the world.
Economic integration projects should be given the utmost priority, symbolised by a railway project linking the countries of the region, which had been discussed by His Majesty and the Turkish President during a summit between GCC states and Turkey in July.
HRH the Crown Prince expressed hope for enhanced investment environment in the energy sector.
He stressed the importance of food security to world peace and security.
He called for a revamp of the educational system so as to develop innovation, initiative and a spirit of leadership.
