 Happy ending to Sania saga?

The Indian media's Save Sania mission in the last few days may not have had the impact it wanted but at least decks have been cleared for the alliance between the Indian tennis ace and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

Constant hounding and an immense amount of publicity later, Sohaib has now "divorced" Ayesha whom he earlier claimed he never married.

The dust seems to have settled, for now!

For five whole days, there seemed to be no other topic for the television channels to discuss.

For all those who have been following the story - Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza's impending marriage with Pakistani cricketer Sohaib Malik - it is a constant source of amusement as well as intrigue to have journalists fall head over heels in their efforts to score a scoop!

Sania, India's very own Helen of Troy, needed to be 'saved' from the 'evil alliance' with Pakistan or so the media thought and that helped generate debates, talk shows, arguments and anecdotes.

As was expected, and as any Indian celebrity is destined to face, controversy courted the marriage with more enthusiasm than perhaps Sohaib himself had while courting Sania.

The emergence of his alleged 'wife', Ayesha, brought about a cinematic twist to the drama with a desperate groom flying in to his future bride's Hyderabad home, more likely to pacify her than the media.

However, those from the fourth estate had a field day with thousands gathering outside her palatial mansion.

And so that the public were not disappointed, a case was filed and police dutifully entered the scene, confiscating Sohaib's passport and questioned him.

The whole nation came to a standstill and will continue to be glued to the TV and newspapers for more news until April 15, when the duo are supposedly getting married.

Whatever happens to the wedding, which has now been reportedly confirmed, one thing is for sure.

Going by the history of Indian television journalism, Sania will not enjoy a quiet married life with Sohaib.

The paparazzi will work towards separating the couple or at least sparking arguments between them at any given opportunity, never mind she is the pride of the nation!

Shoaib was also in news a few years ago for dating Bollywood actress Sayali Bhagat.

But, thankfully, three days after the news of Sania marrying Shoaib broke, Sayali denied a relationship between the two.

This is not the first time celebrities across the border got struck by the cupid's arrow.

In 1983, Bollywood actress Reena Roy gave up her film career to marry Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan and went to live in Pakistan.

The marriage, failed and they separated after they had a daughter.

Other prominent celebrities romantically involved were Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan and Bollywood sensation Zeenat Aman.

However, their relationship did not last long and Imran got married to the daughter of a British millionaire Jemima Goldsmith (but again separated).

Then again there was the (then) Pakistani singer Adnan Sami, who in 2001, fell in love with and married Dubai-based Indian Sabah Galadari, his third marriage. They called off the relationship a year-and-a-half later.

But in 2008, Sabah returned to Mumbai, remarried and began staying with Adnan.

Last year, Sabah registered a case against Adnan, accusing him of physical and mental torture after a fight.

Hopefully, though, Sania will have a lasting and happy married life with Shoaib, now that she has apparently decided he is her man, except for a media-provoked misunderstanding.

They should be wary of that in any case!
