AN Indian maid is being questioned by police after allegedly setting her sponsor's house on fire.
Abdulrasool Hayat Salman, his wife Najat Rashid Al Haiki and their seven-year-old son Mohammed were at home when the fire started but managed to escape unhurt.
It happened at around 9.30am and gutted a bedroom, majlis, hallway, kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor and three bedrooms upstairs.
The maid reportedly raised the alarm, but the family became suspicious and filed a complaint against her at the Muharraq police station.
"The maid came upstairs and told us there was a fire," said Mr Salman.
"I went downstairs and it was smoke everywhere and I couldn't breathe.
"I asked my wife to call the police and meanwhile I tried to put out the fire, but failed and it started spreading to other parts of the house.
"Luckily my mother-in-law, who lives on the ground floor, left the house minutes before the fire started.
"And thank God two of my children were at school while the youngest, who was sleeping in the room, was saved by his mother."
The maid has only worked for the family for seven months and Mr Salman said they were suspicious because she had earlier gone to the police saying she did not want to work for the family.
They are now staying at a neighbour's house.
Police confirmed an investigation was underway.
