Kingdom's housing crisis in spotlight

BAHRAIN'S ongoing housing crisis will be discussed at a special parliament session on January 22.

It comes after MPs criticised the Housing Ministry's plans to solve the issue and described them as slow.

They said more than 50,000 families were on the ministry's waiting list for government housing services with the addition of another 10,000 new couples, who are expected to get married soon.

MPs yesterday approved a proposal to return His Majesty King Hamad's Scheme for Dilapidated Homes under the Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry as a grant instead of the current loan system undertaken by the Housing Ministry.

Parliament also approved the purchase of new homes by the government in the new private Diyar Al Muharraq development, which could be sold to families in Muharraq.

It is an amendment from the original proposal, which would have seen 50 per cent of the development's land bought by the Housing Ministry at a cost of BD150 million.
