Biathlon to raise funds for charity

HUNDREDS of people are expected to attend a charity biathlon taking place at Amwaj Islands later this month.

The event, open to teams and individuals aged 16 and above, will feature a 600m swim followed by a 5km run.

Other races include the juniors Try a Bi, which is open for children aged 12 to 15, and includes a 200m swim and 3km run.

A Try a Bi for adults aged 16 and over will feature a 200m swim followed by a 3km run.

A 4km walkathon will also take place for boys and girls aged 12 and above.

Family entertainment will take place on the sidelines of the sporting action with a DJ as well as face painting, henna and bouncy castles and a bazaar.

Money raised from the event, being held on May 31, will go towards the Alia Centre for Early Intervention.

Event director Adnan Al Qassab is anticipating around 500 participants and spectators to participate.

"I have announced about the event around Bahrain last month and people from other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait have also been informed," he said.

"The distances are ideal for participants who will run. It is not too long for children and adults to take part in.

"All members of the family can join this major event. Not everyone will run but they can watch and enjoy the different activities."

Entry for the biathlon is BD8 for juniors and BD10 for adults, while the junior team entry costs BD12 and adult team entry BD15.

Tickets for the walkathon will cost BD2.

The individual winners of each race will receive a trophy and the second- and third-place finishers and team winners will be given medals.

Registration will take place between 1.30pm and 3.45pm.

There will be a compulsory briefing for runners at 3.45pm before the junior Try a Bi begins at 4pm.

The adult Try a Bi will start at 4.10pm and participants in the main event will run at 4.20pm, followed by the walkathon at 5pm.

Prizes

Prizes will be distributed at around 7pm.

Medical assistance and support will be provided by the Bahrain Specialist Hospital en route and at the start and finish lines.

Water stations will also be available at every km of each race.

The event is being organised by Red House Marketing.

Sponsors include the GDN, Gulf Weekly, Bahrain This Month, 24x7 news, Interior Ministry, Works Ministry, Dock Marine and Nass Scafform.
