BREAKTHROUGH BY POLICE

MANAMA: Police have reported a major breakthrough in an investigation into a massive blast that injured seven officers in Bani Jamra and sent shockwaves through the community.

At least 10 suspects were rounded up within a matter of hours, while people living in the area spoke of their shock at the size of the explosion.

A tight security cordon was set up around Bani Jamra in the wake of Wednesday night's blast, with people prevented from entering or leaving the area until around yesterday afternoon.

Bani Jamra has been turned into a battleground by armed thugs who have launched a series of attacks on police over the past week using Molotov cocktails and home-made shotguns.

Public Security chief Major General Tariq Al Hassan praised the professionalism of Bahrain's security forces and said that investigations into the blast were still continuing.

US Ambassador Thomas Krajeski voiced concerns in a statement issued yesterday.

"We strongly condemn this attack on police and extend our deepest sympathies to all those injured. All violence is completely unacceptable and unhelpful in efforts to rebuild trust and pursue meaningful reconciliation in Bahrain," he said.

"We stress the importance of peace and urge all concerned parties to do everything in their power to prevent further violence.

"It is incumbent upon all segments of Bahraini society to support and participate in the National Dialogue, condemn violence and incitement, and to contribute to a climate conducive for reconciliation."
