Eid bonanza lined up for movie fans

THOUSANDS of movie buffs are expected to flock to the cinema over the weekend for the release of several blockbuster films.

They have been waiting for some hit movies for more than a month as Cineco saved up its stock for the Eid holidays.

The line-up will start with two of the biggest summer blockbusters - The Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim - which will finally hit Bahrain's big screens.

Cineco's six cinemas across Bahrain are expected to be packed as eager fans anticipate the new film starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer and William Fichtner in the classic remake of The Lone Ranger.

Jonny Depp, known in the industry to have an almost cult following, will play Native American spirit warrior Tonto that recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, played by Armie Hammer, into a legend of justice.

The actor, known for his more obscure roles, will take the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

It is one of six films scheduled for release this Eid in what has been described as the summer of sequels.

"To have Jonny Depp in The Lone Ranger, acting in the same style as people saw him in Pirates of the Caribbean, is sure to bring people in and to have it also be a Walt Disney movie just adds to the hype," said Cineco general supervisor Mahmood Jagbeer.

"This Eid, I think all the movies will be hits but as a prediction, I would think that Despicable Me 2 and Smurfs 2 will be the most popular as they both are not just targeted at children, but suitable and entertaining for all ages from two years old and up.

"Also I expect that the Hindi movie Chennai Express will be a hit as Shah Rukh Khan is starring in it and he is a Bollywood superstar that people have been waiting to see."

Chennai Express is a romantic, action comedy that tells the story of a man travelling to fulfil the last wish of his grandfather but finds love on his journey.

Meanwhile, in Smurfs 2, comedians Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Jayma Mays will be the main voices.

The Smurfs team up with their human friends to rescue Smurfette, who has been kidnapped by Gargamel since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer's newest creation, Naughties into real Smurfs.

Another action film, Pacific Rim was held back by distributors for the big Eid release.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end.

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes as washed up former pilot played by Charlie Hunnam and an untested trainee played by Rinko Kikuchi are teamed up to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger (fighting machine) from the past.

This movie shows the next step of CGI (computer generated images) evolution as mystical monsters battle one another for the fate of humanity.

"Pacific Rim is expected to be a big hit as the movie cost $190 million to make and features huge special effects which are sure to impress," said Mr Jagbeer.

"The other action movie Red 2 is also expected to be a hit this Eid.

"The first movie was a big hit and this time there are new stars that have added to the team like Anthony Hopkins.

"Even though the first movie was very popular, we expect this to actually draw in bigger crowds."

The film features stars such as Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Hellen Mirren and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses, played by Bruce Willis, brings back together his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device.

Outgunned and outmanned, they only have their cunning wits, their old-school skills and each other to rely on as they try to save the world-and stay alive in the process.

Families will also be able to enjoy this Eid with the release of the animated comedy, Despicable Me 2, starring the voices of Steve Carell, Ken Jeong and Kristen Wiig.

This time, the Anti-Villain League consults reformed super villain Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, for help when they find themselves dealing with new super criminal Eduardo, voiced by Benjamin Bratt. In order to stop him, Gru teams up with Lucy, a secret agent, and his new love interest, voiced by Kristin Wiig.

"In my opinion one of the biggest movies this year will be Despicable Me 2 as it is a movie that appealed to everyone," added Mr Mr Jagbeer.

"The first movie didn't have the greatest viewership but since its release the characters have become even more popular as many games and apps became available on phones."

Mr Jagbeer said several older movies that still have high demand in theatres like World War Z, Monster University and the Arabic movie Tattah will remain on the big screen throughout Eid.
