<summary><![CDATA[ LONDON: Heavy rain and winds of up to 160kmph caused flash floods across the coastal regions of southern Britain yesterday, closing roads and disrupting transport. 
Scores of motorists had to be rescued from their cars, and in several areas trees toppled onto cars and power lines. Sixty houses were damaged by a tornado in Benfleet, east of London. </P><P>Ferries between England and France were cancelled and three oil rig workers rescued by a lifeboat after their supply boat ran aground at Ness Point, the most easterly point. There were no reported deaths. The met office said conditions should be calmer today.

LONDON: Britain's defence ministry said yesterday it was investigating fresh complaints that its troops had abused prisoners in Iraq. </P><P>News of the probe came after the Independent newspaper reported that Phil Shiner, a lawyer acting for detainees, had catalogued 33 new cases of abuse since the 2003 invasion, including rape and torture.
