Bahrainis to be evacuated

MANAMA: Bahrain will this morning start evacuating its citizens caught in the deadly Beirut clashes. Bahrainis will be taken by bus to Syria for a 3pm flight home from Damascus, the GDN learnt late last night.

 
BD25,000 is target of embassies fundraiser

ORGANISERS of a fund-raising bazaar hope to have reached their target BD25,000 in support of various charity projects. Proceeds from the 27th Embassies Bazaar are being calculated and will be announced by next week when all cheques are submitted, said the organisers.

 
Building on ruins of history

A DECISION to demolish a historic market could threaten Bahrain's chances of landing a place on the World Heritage Council and damage efforts to have Muharraq recognised as a "heritage city" by the United Nations, it was claimed yesterday.The Muharraq Municipal Council has been accused of building "on the ruins of history" after announcing plans to demolish the 198-year-old Qaysariya Suq and replace it with a BD2-million state-of-the-art shopping complex.

BEIRUT: Fierce clashes raged in Beirut yesterday after the Hizbollah said the US-supported Lebanese government had declared war by targeting its communications network.Security sources said the fighting killed at least seven people and wounded 12.

 
Peace talks 'facing problems'

RAMALLAH, West Bank: The Palestinian prime minister says peace talks with Israel are facing problems and that this gives his people more reason to cling to the idea of an independent state. Salam Fayyad spoke during a yesterday's visit to a tent camp set up to mark the Palestinian 'nakba,' or catastrophe.

 
Throwing away a fortune!

LONDON: The amount of good food Britons throw away unnecessarily is at record levels, according to a study yesterday, costing the economy £10 billion (BD7.4bn) a year.More than half of the 6.7 million tonnes of food that households throw away annually is still edible, the study from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) revealed.

Ferrari keen to maintain pace

RIO DE JANEIRO: South Africa's new coach Joel Santana had a nightmare farewell to Flamengo when his side blew a two-goal first-leg lead at home to America and were knocked out of the Libertadores Cup yesterday.In other third-round, second-leg ties, defending champions Boca Juniors won 2-1 at Cruzeiro to complete a 4-2 aggregate victory and Adriano scored to set Sao Paulo on the way to a 2-0 win over Nacional which put them through.
